Closure issued for coastal beach areas due to sewage contamination

By SDCN Staff

San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality on Sunday issued multiple beach closures and advisories across the region, warning of sewage-contaminated ocean water that could pose health risks to the public.

A water contact closure remains in effect for areas including Coronado North Beach, which continues to be impacted by runoff from the Tijuana River.

Officials said the river is actively flowing into coastal waters, carrying sewage that may cause illness. Beaches in affected areas will remain closed until testing and field observations confirm the water is safe for recreational use.

Additionally, several locations are under advisory due to elevated bacteria levels exceeding state health standards. These include Glorietta Bay Park Shoreline, Ocean Beach Dog Beach, Tecolote Shores Swim Area, Santa Clara Cove Swim Area, San Luis Rey River Outlet and La Jolla Children’s Pool.

Health officials advise beachgoers to avoid water contact in impacted areas, noting that exposure to contaminated ocean water may lead to illness.

County officials added that the ocean shoreline stretching from the International Border through the northern end of the Silver Strand will remain closed until water quality meets safety standards.
