San Diego, CA–Fire crews were called to the scene Saturday afternoon of a small plane crash on the northwest corner of the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa, authorities said.

One man was on board the Cirrus SR20 aircraft when it crashed just before 12:30 p.m. in a field near the airport. 

San Diego Fire Department personnel rescued the victim from the aircraft and transported him to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries.

There were no reports of injuries on the ground. The plane went down within the airport’s property, San Diego Fire Department tweeted.

San Diego City and County HAZMAT teams responded to the scene to mitigate the fuel on the field. There was no fire or explosion at the time of the crash.
