SAN DIEGO–Authorities are investigating a single engine plane crash that killed two passengers and injured two others Saturday after it slammed into a Clairemont home.
The Beechcraft plane departed Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport around 4:30 p.m. with four passengers. Shortly after take off the pilot reported engine failure to Montgomery Field’s radio tower, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Chief Brian Fennessy.
“The pilot told the tower that he was going to attempt to land back at Montgomery Field,” Fire Chief Fennessy said.
According to witnesses the plane landed on an open field near Lafayette Elementary School and skidded through a fence into the home, located in the 6000 block of Chandler Drive, authorities say.
No residents were inside the home at the time of the crash. One dog was killed in the home.
The surviving passengers were able to escape the plane, but suffered burns and injuries. Paramedics took the victims to a local hospital.
The plane crash is under investigation.
