CLAIREMONT—Actor Mark Hamill was honored in San Diego Sunday afternoon with a street naming ceremony held in a Clairemont neighborhood.
The 65-year-old actor and his wife, Marilou, sons Nathan and Griffin, and daughter, Chelsea attended the 2 p.m. ‘Mark Hamill Day ceremony held in the northeast corner of Mount Abernathy Avenue and Castleton Drive.
“I can’t tell you how great it feels to be back in my old neighborhood. To say that I’m grateful and honored is would be an understatement,” Hamill said to throngs of fans who gathered for the event.
Hamill, 65, the son of U.S. Navy Captain Thomas Hamill, lived in San Diego for four years in the 5900 block of Castleton Drive.
‘I’m the middle of seven children. My father was a career Naval officer. I went to nine schools in 12 years. Three of them when I lived in San Diego. And in four years, that was the longest stay I had in any city.”
Hamill added, “The part of me is honored because the community reached out and made me a part something I wanted for so long. A sense of place. I really don’t have a hometown. But if I could pick a hometown it certainly be San Diego. I loved living here.”
San Diego Councilmember Chris Cate (District 6) and Clairemont Town Council President Eden Yaege joined Hamill on stage in the unveiling of the “Mark Hamill” honorary street sign.
Hamill is best known for his iconic role as ‘Luke Skywalker’ in the 1977 film, “Star Wars.” He also starred in other films, “The Big Red One” and “Corvette Summer.” Hamill is talented voice actor who is best known for his role as the ‘Joker’ in the animated television series, “Batman: The Animated Series.”
