LEMON GROVE–An accidental discharge from a .22 handgun resulted in a non-life-threatening injury to a Sheriff’s deputy.

The incident occurred at 5:30 p.m. after a joint task force completed the execution of a local search warrant in East San Diego County. Members of the task force returned to the Lemon Grove substation to secure evidence acquired during the service of this search warrant.

While unloading and attempting to render safe a seized .22 handgun, a federal agent assigned to the task force, was manipulating the weapon and accidentally fired a round, which hit the deputy in the lower leg.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital and is expected to completely recover.

Names of the injured deputy and the federal agent were not released. Sheriff’s Department detectives are investigating the incident.
