San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has increased its patrols around the region looking for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The patrols began on Friday and will continue through Labor Day on Monday.
During the weekend, 111 people were arrested countywide for DUI. So far, 4,450 people have been arrested across San Diego County for impaired driving, the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.
Driving under the influence doesn’t mean alcohol. It also includes prescription drugs or marijuana.
Deputies advise individuals who do drink have a designated driver, ride-sharing service, or taxi ready.
An impaired driving arrest and conviction can cost more than $15,000 in legal and court fees.
Funding for the Labor Day weekend impaired driving patrols is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
