EL CAJON–Four adults and four children were displaced Thursday morning after a fire damaged their two-story apartment units in El Cajon, fire officials say.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., Heartland Fire and Rescue units from El Cajon, with assistance from San Miguel Fire and Lakeside Fire, were dispatched to a reported residential structure fire in the 200 block of Jamacha Road.

Fire crews arrived within four minutes to find a two-story, multi family residence with heavy smoke and fire coming from the second story unit.

Firefighters contained the blaze within eight minutes. The apartment below the unit of origin had sustained water damage to it. All occupants safely evacuated prior to fire department arrival.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the families.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $300,000.
