Oceanside, CA–A full rail closure between Oceanside and San Diego will be in effect this weekend to accommodate work along the rail line.
The closure will affect rail services operating on the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor, including North County Transit District (NCTD) and the freight carrier BNSF.
The closure is scheduled from 12:00 a.m. October 22, through the evening on October 23.
San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) crews will distribute and grade ballast rocks along the El Portal Undercrossing bridge in Encinitas. The operation will be done to install regulatory-compliant walkways for railroad personnel on both sides of the bridge. NCTD and other agencies will work on separate routine construction along other stretches of the LOSSAN corridor.
Riders are encouraged to plan for increased travel time on the morning of October 24, when Coaster passenger services are scheduled to resume, as trains could be delayed.
During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise from loading materials and equipment backup alarms. Traffic control, including flagging, will be in place at the Leucadia Boulevard rail crossing during the placement and removal of trucks and equipment. Minor pedestrian flagging will occur at the undercrossing when the ballast is unloaded near the bridge.
The closure is not related to the Amtrak and Metrolink September 30 passenger service suspension that was enacted due to safety concerns related to erosion near San Clemente.
