San Diego, CA–A pedestrian was struck and killed by a northbound Coaster train in San Diego Thursday, authorities said.

The collision, reported just before 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Sassafras Street and Pacific Highway, has prompted an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. 

When San Diego police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a man had been hit by the train. Despite immediate medical attention from paramedics, the victim died of his injuries.

In response to the incident, the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit, responsible for investigating events along the routes of the North County Transit District, has taken charge of the investigation. The San Diego Police Department requested the involvement of the Sheriff’s Department to conduct a thorough examination of the collision.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will positively identify the deceased man and determine the cause and manner of death. Notification of the family will precede the release of this information.
