LA JOLLA–Beginning April 13, a series of full overnight closures will go into effect on Genesee Avenue for the Mid-Coast Trolley project.

Crews will remove the last remaining section of falsework—or temporary support structures—from the more than one-mile stretch of Trolley bridge that runs from Regents Road to Nobel Drive.

This marks a milestone moment for the project, and a culmination of efforts that have been in place since falsework was first installed along Genesee Avenue in 2017. Since that time, 144, 90-ton concrete girders have been set and approximately 150,000 cubic yards of concrete placed to form the bridge that now soars over the thoroughfare and will guide the Trolley through the heart of the University community.

Once concrete hardened along the bridge, crews were able to begin removing falsework and have been working for several months to complete the process. The final section of falsework will be removed from the future UTC Trolley station, the final stop on the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley extension.

To accommodate the falsework removal, full closures of Genesee Avenue will be in place between La Jolla Village Drive and Nobel Drive:

Monday, April 13 through Thursday, April 16

  • Southbound closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night
  • Northbound closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night

Sunday, April 19 through Thursday, April 23

  • Southbound closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night
  • Northbound closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night

The Mid-Coast Trolley project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north to the University community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and University Towne Centre. Nine new stations are part of the project and are under construction. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in late 2021.
