ENCINITAS–More than 20,000 pounds of free pet food was given away to animal rescue groups at Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas Friday morning.
The food was donated through Rescue Bank operated by Greater Good.org, a non-profit organization that supports animal rescue and rehabilitation groups by providing services and supplies. The pet food was distributed to non-profit rescue groups throughout the San Diego area.
“This donation is arriving through Rescue Bank and Greatergood.org,” says Rancho Coastal Humane Society spokesman John Van Zante. “The food will be distributed to 501 (c) (3) non-profit pet rescue groups beginning Friday afternoon. This allows them to use money allotted for food to cover medical and other expenses.”
“Rancho Coastal Humane Society has done this many times in the past. Under normal circumstances the rescue groups pay for shipping,” Rancho Coastal Humane Society President Judi Sanzo says. “Due to COVID 19, Rescue Bank tells us the cost of shipping has been paid. The food is absolutely free. The rescues can use the money they save to pay for spay/neuter, veterinary services, and supplies to provide care until the pets are adopted.”
Sanzo says the food was distributed equally between the groups that arrived at the shelter Friday afternoon.
“We want to help as many pets and organizations as possible.” There are about 200 rescue groups in San Diego County. All of their animals deserve proper nutrition,” Sanzo said.
