Vista, CA–A motorist suspected of driving at a high rate of speed was killed, and two people were injured Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision in Vista, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reports.

Sheriff’s deputies and Vista Fire Department personnel responded to a 1:34 p.m. report of a serious injury vehicle collision in the 1000 block of Vale Terrace Drive. 

A white Mazda sedan driving eastbound on Vale Terrace Drive at a high rate of speed lost control and collided head-on with a westbound Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the white Mazda sedan, a 44-year-old male, was transported to Palomar Medical Center. Despite medical intervention, his death was pronounced on July 24. The front passenger of the white Mazda sedan, a 44-year-old female, was transported to Palomar Medical Center and is in serious condition. 

The driver of the black Chevrolet Silverado, a 77-year-old male, was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla via ambulance for serious, not life-threatening injuries. 

At this time, it is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the collision, authorities said. 

The Sheriff’s Department Vista Traffic Division is handling the investigation.
