OCEANSIDE—Authorities released the name of the suspect who was fatally shot by a Sheriff’s deputy during a hit and run pursuit in Oceanside.

Authorities say the suspect, 41-year-old Javier Gomez, of Oceanside, led Deputy Kai Bowman on a pursuit in the city. Gomez allegedly stopped his vehicle in the 3100 block of Camarillo Avenue and fled on foot. The deputy pursued the driver on foot to the intersection of Roselle Avenue and Camarillo Avenue. Gomez allegedly produced a handgun and the deputy fired his service weapon. Gomez was struck and fell to the ground. Other deputies arrived on scene and began providing medical aid to the suspect until paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.    

Authorities located a handgun at the scene of the shooting. A female who was a passenger in the vehicle was detained by detectives, interviewed, and subsequently released.

Deputy Bowman was wearing a body worn camera during the pursuit, authorities say. Oceanside police department detectives have reviewed the footage from the device relevant to the incident.

Deputy Bowman has been with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for approximately 5 years.  

Oceanside police continue to investigate the shooting incident.
