Two people rescued from ocean near Oceanside Jetty

By Gina Yarbrough

Oceanside, CA–Lifeguards and firefighters from the Oceanside Fire Department rescued two people after they were swept off the North Jetty by large waves on Tuesday, authorities said.

Nearby surfers assisted the individuals until first responders arrived. Strong currents and heavy surf in the area made the rescue especially challenging.

Lifeguards located the two individuals in the water. One victim, in a near-drowning situation, was transported in stable condition to a trauma center. The second person sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.

The department’s Marine Safety Boat, staffed 24/7 with two lifeguards and a paramedic firefighter, supported the rescue operation.

Officials reminded the public of the dangers of walking on or near jetties, where slippery rocks and unpredictable ocean conditions can create sudden hazards.
