El Cajon, CA–Several people have been arrested following ongoing criminal activity at a homeless encampment in East County, authorities said.
The encampment, located near Willow Glen Drive in unincorporated El Cajon, was the scene of a small fire on Tuesday at approximately 2 p.m. Firefighters responded and extinguished the flames to prevent further property damage. No injuries were reported.
Over the past month, deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homeless Assistance Resource Team (HART) have conducted multiple outreach efforts at the site, offering services and resources to individuals experiencing homelessness. Despite these efforts, reports of criminal activity persisted, prompting further law enforcement action.
On Wednesday, the Sheriff’s HART conducted an enforcement operation at the encampment, resulting in several arrests. The charges included drug-related offenses, outstanding misdemeanor warrants, and identity theft. Following the operation, the encampment was cleared, and clean-up efforts commenced.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes a balanced approach of outreach and enforcement, working in collaboration with community partners to provide assistance to those in need while addressing criminal activity that affects public safety.
