Oceanside, CA–A residential fire erupted Tuesday afternoon in the garage of a home at 165 Foussat Road, causing significant damage to the house.
The Oceanside Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 3:12 p.m. after a person walking by the house noticed smoke billowing from the open garage.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames pouring out of the garage. Crews immediately entered the home to search for trapped occupants and assess whether the fire had spread to other parts of the structure.
Firefighters outside directed hose streams into the garage to prevent the blaze from spreading to the rest of the house. The fire was declared under control by 3:39 p.m.
The large volume of stored items in the garage complicated the operation, requiring additional personnel to extinguish the contents. During a secondary search, firefighters discovered two cats hiding under a bed inside the home. Both pets were safely rescued and returned to the resident.
Fire investigators determined that the fire originated in the garage due to issues with electrical wiring. In light of this incident, the Oceanside Fire Department urges residents to address the potential hazards of outdated electrical systems.
“Many homes, especially older ones, still rely on outdated electrical wiring not designed to handle the demands of modern appliances and electronics,” the department stated. “Ignoring these aging systems can lead to severe consequences, including electrical fires, electrocution, and costly repairs.”
No injuries were reported during the incident, but the damage to the property serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining safe and up-to-date electrical systems.
