Escondido, CA–A pedestrian crossing the street was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Friday night in Escondido, authorities said.

According to the Escondido Police Department, the collision occurred at approximately 8:33 p.m. at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Redwood Street. Police said the driver was traveling eastbound when the vehicle struck a man who was crossing the street. The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His identity has not been released pending notification of family members.

Investigators later located the suspected vehicle abandoned a short distance from the crash scene. Authorities are also examining whether a second vehicle may have been involved in the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
