Vista, CA–A 43-year-old man died early Sunday morning while in custody at the Vista Detention Facility, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies discovered the man unresponsive in his cell during a routine safety check around 3 a.m. They immediately called 911, requested medical assistance, and began performing CPR.
Paramedics and members of the Vista Fire Department arrived shortly after and took over lifesaving efforts. Despite their attempts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:20 a.m.
The man had been in custody since June 15 on multiple burglary charges and a felony vandalism charge. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences:
“The San Diego Sheriff’s Office extends our sympathies to the decedent’s family and all those affected by his passing. A Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they navigate through this difficult time.”
The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is conducting a full investigation, as is standard procedure for all in-custody deaths. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has also been notified. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
