Carlsbad, CA–A driver was arrested early Saturday morning in connection with a fatal bicycle collision in Carlsbad, authorities said.
The suspected driver was identified as 27-year-old Alexander Gendron of Escondido, according to the Carlsbad Police Department’s news release.
Officers responded to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist on the 4400 block of Carlsbad Boulevard. When they arrived around 4:34 a.m., they found the bicyclist unresponsive in the roadway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
With help from the community, the city’s license plate reader system, and a police drone, officers located the suspected driver about a mile away.
Gendron was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal collision, DUI causing injury or death, and vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility, authorities said.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased at a later time. Police noted that alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash, though the cause remains under investigation.
