San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Department of Animal Services executed a warrant on Friday to seize horses at a local ranch as part of an investigation following the death of a horse named Penny last month.
Animal Services Director Vaughn Maurice, Assistant Director Rachael Borrelli, Animal Control Lt. Lewis Peterson, veterinarian Dr. Caitlin Manring of East County Large and Small Animal Practice, and two sheriff’s deputies were on site on Artesian Road to evaluate the animals.
Officials reported that two horses were found with low body condition scores. Both animals were impounded for further medical evaluation and to ensure proper care.
“Our animal care officers are committed to serving the County of San Diego for animal rescues, relinquishment, and animal cruelty or neglect investigations in the unincorporated areas of San Diego County,” Maurice said in a statement.
The Department of Animal Services oversees the welfare of animals in unincorporated areas of the county and operates two shelters, which provide care for thousands of animals each year.
