OCEANSIDE–North County residents honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by serving their communities Saturday.

The North San Diego County NAACP hosted its annual Martin Luther King Day of Service at MiraCosta College in Oceanside.

Volunteers gathered at the campus to choose an organization to service for the afternoon. 

San Diego County News followed a group of volunteers to Friendly Church of God in Christ in Oceanside.

The church, in partnership with Botanical Community Development Initiatives, transformed a vacant lot next to the church into a community garden. 

The volunteers pulled overgrown weeds, added new plants, compost and seeds to the garden.
