CARLSBAD–A 39-year-old man suffered serious injuries Saturday when his vehicle struck a large branch that had fallen into the road in Carlsbad, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

The driver was transported to a local area hospital for severe injuries.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., Carlsbad police officers responded to El Camino Real north of Jackspar Drive for a report of a single vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers located a Toyota Prius that had collided into a tree and one male who identified himself as the driver. 

The man drove on the northbound lanes of El Camino Real north of Jackspar Drive, and struck a large tree branch that had fallen into the lanes of traffic and lost control of his vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the collision.
