SAN DIEGO–The Medical Examiner’s Office has concluded their autopsy report on a female inmate found dead in her cell last November at Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility.
The Medical Examiner provided the report to the Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit.
The female has been identified as 24-year-old Elisa Serna of Alpine. The cause of death was complications of chronic polysubstance abuse with a contributing factor of early intrauterine pregnancy, and the manner of death to be natural.
On November 11, 2019, at approximately 8:07 p.m., deputies doing a security check at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility found an inmate unresponsive in her cell. Deputies and medical staff performed first aid until relieved by paramedics. Despite lifesaving efforts, the female was pronounced dead. She was alone in her cell within the Medical Observation Unit and no preliminary evidence of foul play was discovered. She had been in custody for six days for theft and drug related charges.
