Carlsbad, CA–A welfare check led to a Carlsbad man barricading himself inside his bedroom with his 2-year-old child Saturday morning, the Carlsbad Police Department said.

Carlsbad police responded to a welfare check call, just before 7 a.m., to a residence in the 6900 block of Clearwater Street.

Officers attempted to speak to the man who had locked himself inside his bedroom with the toddler. He refused to communicate with officers or leave the bedroom,

The Carlsbad Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team and Crisis Negotiations Team were called to the scene to establish communication with the man. After approximately four hours, the man peacefully surrendered to authorities. The child was recovered unharmed, and the man was taken into custody and booked into the Vista Detention Facility for false imprisonment from a prior incident, criminal threats, having an unregistered firearm, and delaying an officer. A handgun was recovered in the residence, but not used during the incident.
