OCEANSIDE–A man who allegedly vandalized homes and vehicles in an Oceanside neighborhood early Wednesday morning died after Oceanside police officers confronted him and shot him with a taser gun after he threw a windshield wiper at them, the Oceanside Police Department reports.

Oceanside police responded at 3: 18 a.m. to numerous calls of vandalism, burglary and assault in the 3500 block of Strawberry Place. The suspect described as a white male adult in his late 40’s had thrown rocks at homes, vehicles and at one point ran through the inside of a neighbors residence. He had also attacked a male neighbor with a metal object injuring his shoulder. Officers checked the neighborhood and eventually located the man close by on the Mira Costa College campus.

When police contacted the man he refused to comply with the officers and attempted to attack them with a metal object that was later determined to be a windshield wiper arm and blade broken off a vandalized vehicle from the neighborhood. A taser was deployed and the man was taken into custody. Officers noticed the man had shallow breathing that stopped and began lifesaving measures. Those lifesaving measures were continued by Oceanside Fire Department Paramedics to no avail and he died at the scene.

The case investigation is ongoing by the Oceanside Police Departments Crimes of Violence Unit and the San Diego District Attorney’s Office.
