Valley Center, CA–A man is facing assault charges after using a combat knife to stab a family member Wednesday morning on the La Jolla Indian Reservation, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. when deputies responded to an emergency request for assistance from La Jolla Reservation Tribal Police in the 500 block of Amago Road on the La Jolla Indian Reservation. Minutes earlier, tribal police received a call regarding an altercation between 28-year-old Joseph Raymond Amagoand his family. Tribal police advised responding deputies Amago was armed with a large combat knife, Lt. Jim Emig of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
Upon arrival, deputies learned Amago argued with his uncle and then stabbed him with a knife. The victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to Palomar Hospital for treatment. The injuries sustained by the victim were not life-threatening. Deputies attempted to detain Amago who was still at the scene and armed with the knife. He was uncooperative and ran into an empty field adjacent to the residence. Deputies developed a dialogue with him and attempted to persuade him to drop the knife, but he refused to cooperate and a six-hour standoff ensued. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiations Team and Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail responded and assisted with the negotiations. After approximately five hours of negotiations, Amago peacefully surrendered and was taken into custody.
After a medical evaluation by fire department personnel, Amago was booked into the Vista Detention Facility for assault with a deadly weapon and displaying a weapon in a threatening manner.
