El Cajon, CA–A homicide suspect who refused to comply with police was fatally shot after he reportedly pulled a shotgun from his vehicle.
On Tuesday, just before 5 p.m., San Diego Police officers and Sheriff’s deputies were conducting a follow-up in the 800 block of La Cresta Blvd. in unincorporated El Cajon.
The follow-up was regarding a homicide that occurred in San Diego. Officers coordinated with Sheriff’s deputies to check the La Cresta address utilizing a Sheriff’s helicopter. Shortly afterward, the suspect was contacted by officers and deputies near his vehicle that was parked to the rear of the residence, Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Chris Steffen stated in a news release.
When contacted, the suspect failed to comply with instructions prompting officers to deploy less lethal bean bag rounds, which had no effect. The suspect then reached for what appeared to be a shotgun from inside his vehicle. An officer-involved shooting occurred involving two officers from the San Diego Police Department. Despite lifesaving efforts by paramedics, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation.
No officers or deputies were injured.
The suspect has been identified, but his identity is not being released pending family notifications.
Authorities said there is body-worn camera footage of the incident.
