Encinitas, CA–The city of Encinitas is taking proactive steps to fortify its defenses against potential flooding for this week’s storm.

Pumps have been strategically stationed at four key locations, including Leucadia Roadside Park, Europa Street Alley, Fulvia Street, and Orpheus Avenue, as part of the city’s comprehensive storm preparation initiative.

Public works crews are diligently engaged in cleaning the basin at Ocean Cove Drive and the outfall at San Elijo Lagoon. Simultaneously, the city’s contracted teams are in the process of cleaning the storm drain system along the Ocean Cove Drive basin, reinforcing the city’s commitment to minimizing the impact of inclement weather.

During the heavy rains, public works and wastewater crews will be actively monitoring various areas throughout the city, ready to respond promptly to incidents such as temporary flooding and the removal of fallen trees or branches. The city has deployed three vac-con trucks, and strategically placed flood signage will be utilized as needed during the storms. Timely updates on road closures will be communicated through the city’s official social media channels and website.

Residents are strongly encouraged to play an active role in safeguarding their homes by taking advantage of self-fillable sandbag stations located at the Public Works Parking Lot, 160 Calle Magdalena in Encinitas, and Leucadia Roadside Park, 860 North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. Each resident is eligible for up to 10 sandbags to bolster their property’s defenses against potential flooding.

In addition to these measures, individual preparedness can significantly reduce the risk of flooding near homes and properties. Encinitas residents are urged to follow these simple steps:

  • Clear storm drains and curb gutters around homes by removing debris such as trash, leaves, and grass clippings.
  • Ensure that trash and recycle bins are securely closed when placed for collection, positioning them 2 to 3 feet away from the curb to maintain unobstructed stormwater flow.
  • Conserve water by proactively turning off irrigation systems to minimize runoff.
  • Familiarize themselves with safe routes to and from their property in the event of flooding.
  • Exercise caution by avoiding travel through floodwaters, whether driving, riding, or walking.
  • Refrain from opening or lifting manhole covers during street flooding.

By adhering to these guidelines and working collaboratively with the city’s storm preparation efforts, residents can contribute to a safer and more resilient community in the face of adverse weather conditions.
