SAN DIEGO–California Highway Patrol officers arrested a 26-year-old driver who led authorities in a vehicle pursuit in San Diego Thursday.

San Diego CHP units responded to a pedestrian call at approximately 5:25 p.m. on Interstate 8 eastbound, west of State Route 163. As one of the units began a traffic break, a white Toyota 4 Runner, driven by Alec Zachary Bennett, of Fallbrook, drove past the CHP unit at a high rate of speed. The unit running the traffic break began to pursue the Toyota which fled eastbound on Interstate 8.

During the pursuit Bennet discharged a firearm at CHP units several times. The officers returned fire, which did not strike Bennett.

As the pursuit approached Buckman Springs Road, United States Customs and Border Protection officers, successfully spiked the Toyota tires. Bennett slowed to a stop and fled the vehicle on foot to a nearby Caltrans maintenance yard. CHP officers located Bennett and deployed their Electronic Control Device striking him. The officers attempted to take Bennett into custody at which point Bennett began to struggle with the officers. San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the location with their K-9, which assisted CHP officers to take Bennett into custody.

Bennett was transported to Sharp Grossmont Hospital for treatment and was booked into San Diego County Jail.
