CA Department of Justice probes Sheriff’s Shooting in Alpine

By Gina Yarbrough

San Diego, CA–The California Department of Justice has opened an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting on Wednesday night in Alpine involving San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies and an individual later found to be armed with a replica handgun.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on the 1700 block of Kyrsten Terrace Court. Deputies responding to the scene encountered a person who reportedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them. Deputies fired, fatally striking the individual.

Investigators later determined that the weapon in question was a replica firearm.

The Sheriff’s Office said it will release body-worn camera footage and a Critical Incident Video in the coming days to provide additional details about the shooting.

The California Department of Justice’s Police Shooting Investigation Team launched a review Thursday in accordance with Assembly Bill 1506, which requires the state to investigate officer-involved shootings resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent evaluation.
