SAN DIEGO–In an effort to reduce operational costs and increase overall efficiencies, the City of San Diego has announced it will be closing the Miramar Landfill.
The landfill, located at 5180 Convoy Street, will be closed on Sundays beginning Oct. 7. It will also be closed during the summer’s three primary holidays, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, beginning next year.
“A six day per week operation will reduce equipment expenditures, as well as improve staff coverage and customer service during the new Monday through Saturday schedule,” said Mario X. Sierra, Director of the City’s Environmental Services Department (ESD). “The closures will also reduce staff overtime expenses.”
Signs notifying the public about changes to the Miramar Landfill hours of operation have been posted on site and flyers detailing the closures are being distributed to customers at the landfill entrance. In addition to summer holidays, the landfill will remain closed on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The City’s recycling contractor, Allan Company, will also be closing the Recycling Center located at the landfill on Sundays and holidays to mirror the landfill schedule.
The changes are projected to save the City approximately $500,000 annually in reduced staffing, contractual services, heavy equipment usage, fuel and maintenance.
