San Diego, CA–An 85-year-old man who was in the custody of the San Diego Police Department died at a local hospital late Thursday night, prompting an investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit.
According to authorities, San Diego police officers arrested the man on June 18 on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence. Officials said the arrest was made without incident.
Following his arrest, the man was transported to the San Diego Central Jail for booking. During the intake process, medical staff determined he required additional medical evaluation and arranged for him to be taken to a local hospital. He remained under SDPD custody while receiving treatment.
Authorities said the man’s condition continued to deteriorate on June 19. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:54 p.m.
In accordance with the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding governing in-custody deaths, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to the man’s family and others affected by his death.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The identity of the man has not been released pending confirmation and notification of next of kin.
