San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office on Monday has released the name of the officer involved in the officer‑involved shooting that occurred in San Ysidro on July 29.
The officer who discharged his weapon has been identified as Officer Ricardo Zambrano. He has been with the San Diego Police Department for about eight years and is assigned to patrol at the Southern Division.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded to an officer‑involved shooting that occurred in the 3600 block of Beyer Blvd. in San Diego.
An officer located a vehicle reported as stolen driving within an apartment complex, resulting in the shooting. A passenger inside the vehicle was struck. Additional officers arrived, provided medical aid, and requested paramedics. The injured passenger was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non‑life‑threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was detained but later released. The injured individual was also not arrested.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation into the officer‑involved shooting. At this stage, the motivation and circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Detectives are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing all aspects of the event.
The investigative and review process for officer‑involved shootings is thorough and multi‑layered. Once the homicide unit completes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether any criminal liability exists. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the officer’s discharge of the firearm.
