SAN DIEGO – The Cabrillo Bridge (Laurel Street Overcrossing) leading into the west side of Balboa Park will be closed to vehicles on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 10 until 5 the following morning, according to Caltrans.

The bridge deck will also be closed on Thursday night beginning at 11 until 5 a.m.  A fourth closure may be scheduled on Nov. 3, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. as needed.

The closures are necessary to allow crews to prepare and paint the concrete barrier walls on each side of the bridge deck.

Motorists leaving Balboa Park during the closure hours will be directed to exit from the east side of the park onto Park Boulevard.

Pedestrian access through the work zone will be accommodated via escort.

Construction began last year on the $38 million Cabrillo Bridge Retrofit and Rehabilitation Project to seismically strengthen the bridge and replace deteriorated concrete and steel.  Exterior bridge scaffolding was removed earlier this month.  Temporary concrete barriers along SR-163 will be removed and the striping returned to the original configuration by the end of November.  Crews are expected to complete the remaining interior bridge work in early 2015.
