Los Angeles, CA–The 93rd Academy Awards Sunday ditched its traditional ceremony for a low-key show at Union Station and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles.
The film, “Nomadland” nabbed the Oscar for Best Picture, and the film’s director, Chloé Zhao made Academy history as the first woman of color, and the second woman to win an Oscar for directing. Frances McDormand won Best Actress for her role in the film.
One of the night’s surprises went to Anthony Hopkins who won Best Actor in the film, “The Father.”
Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award for his contributions to those in need in his community. He paid funeral costs for families who lost loved ones killed by police, created Camp Quarantine at his Atlanta studio to allow artists to continue to work through the pandemic, he provided financial assistance to students to continue their higher education, and paid for seniors’ groceries at markets.
