SAN DIEGO–Billed as “lovingly ripped off from the classic comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, “Spamlot” kicks off Cygnet Theatre’s sixteenth season.
With book and lyrics by Monty Python actor Eric Idle, music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle, directed by Sean Murray with musical direction by Terry O’Donnell and choreography by Katie Banville, the production runs June 27 through August 5.
This highly irreverent parody tells the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences will be eating up “Spamlot.” Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the show elevates silliness to an art form.
Spamalot opened on Broadway to financial and critical success, breaking records for advance ticket sales. Says Murray, who played King Arthur in Moonlight Stage Production’s version in 2014 and will reprise his role for show, “It turned into a cultural phenomenon with wide fan bases that can’t get enough of the tongue-in-cheek humor and hilariously skewered broadway-syle musical numbers. We’re excited to bring it to Cygnet!”
Once again leading the quest as King Arthur is Cygnet’s Artistic Director Sean Murray. King Arthur’s trusty servant Patsy is Jonathan Sangster (San Diego Musical Theatre; The Full Monty). Playing his gallant knights – and a broad assortment of other characters – are Evan White (San Diego Musical Theatre; South Pacific) as Sir Lancelot the Homicidally Brave, James Saba (Hay Fever, The Vortex) as Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, David Humphrey (A Little Night Music) as Sir Galahad the Dashingly Handsome, Anthony Methvin (Backyard Renaissance; Gutenberg! The Musical!) as Sir Bedevere the Strangely Flatulent, and Christine Hewitt (A Little Night Music) as The Lady of the Lake. The cast is rounded out by local favorites including Bryan Banville, Drew Bradford, Trevor Cruse, Donny Gersonde, Siri Hafso, Jenny Henkel, Lauren Long, Janissa Saracino, Kaleb Scott, and Emmanuel Young.
The production features set design by Sean Fanning, lighting design by Chris Rynne, projection design by Blake McCarty, sound design by Matt Lescault-Wood, properties design by Bonnie Durben, and wigs and makeup by Peter Herman. Craig Campbell will stage manage.
