San Diego, CA–The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) has announced the acquisition of three new works as part of its annual Prospect initiative—an effort that not only expands the museum’s permanent collection but also gives insight into how contemporary artworks become part of this celebrated institution.
MCASD’s collection currently includes over 5,600 works created after 1950, spanning media such as painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation art. While many admire these pieces on the gallery walls, few are aware of the process that brings them into the fold. One key method is through Prospect, a long-standing initiative supported by the museum’s Director’s Circle.
Now in its 40th year, Prospect allows a portion of the Director’s Circle’s financial contributions to be used to acquire new works. Each year, curators select several pieces for potential acquisition, displaying them in the galleries for public viewing alongside the existing collection. This year’s exhibition, Prospect 2025, is on view through November 2.
The initiative culminated in a celebratory selection event on June 11, where Director’s Circle members voted to add two of five nominated works to the museum’s collection. A third piece was acquired thanks to additional donations from inspired patrons in attendance.
“The exhibition presents five beguiling artworks that are characterized by a state we might describe as ‘both/and,’” said Kathryn Kanjo, MCASD’s David C. Copley Executive Director and CEO. “Whether wall-bound or seen in the round, these hybrid objects commingle categories and genres that are usually seen as separate—including art, fashion, craft, design, botany, and technology.”
Kanjo noted that the featured artists reflect the evolving nature of contemporary practice while drawing inspiration from traditions such as found-object art. “For 40 years, the generous donors who make up the Director’s Circle have enabled us to grow our collection and represent the current generation of contemporary artists,” she added.
This year’s selected artists include Ryan Preciado, Sarah Rosalena, and Bárbara Sánchez-Kane, each bringing a unique voice and vision to MCASD’s ever-expanding narrative of post-1950s art.
Prospect 2025 is currently on display at MCASD and runs through November 2.
