La Jolla, CA–The winner of the 135th Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship will be determined at Pepperdine University at a later date after tournament officials canceled play on Sunday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis due to inclement weather.
Earlier in the day, before persistent rain washed out play, ninth-seeded Linus Carlsson Halldin and George Davis of Pepperdine advanced to the final after scoring an impressive 6-2, 6-3 semifinal victory over eighth-seeded Emon van Loben Sels and Spencer Johnson of UCLA.
With one finalist determined, the other semifinal featured an all-Pepperdine affair as fourth-seeded Maximillian Homberg and Christopher Papa faced their ninth-seeded teammates Pietro Fellin and Edward Winter on Court 1.
Homberg and Papa took 3-2 lead in the first set, but the skies opened and play was suspended. With the forecast predicting more rain, tournament officials decided to cancel play.
“No matter how it works out there will be two Pepperdine teams in the final,” said Bill Kellogg, Tournament Director and president of La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
“Getting the courts dry when the sun is going down gets to be iffy,” Kellogg said. “And if you have another (rain) cell come through, you’re done. It was just not looking like we could do it. Theoretically, it was possible, but it was not looking good.”
According to Kellogg, Homberg, Papa and Fellin, and Winter will complete their semifinal and the winner will meet Halldin and Davis for the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles title at a later date.
“I think it was a tremendous tournament,” Kellogg said. “It had some of the greatest depth, from day one, that I had ever seen. It was unbelievable.”
