San Diego, CA–The San Diego Padres have acquired right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson from the Washington Nationals in exchange for right-hander Mason Thompson and shortstop Jordy Barley, San Diego Padres said Friday.
In 31 relief appearances this season, Hudson has posted a 4-1 record with a 2.20 ERA (8 ER, 32.2 IP), .195 opponents average (23 H, 118 AB) and 48 strikeouts to just seven walks. The 34-year-old ranks 3rd among all qualifying National League relievers in SO/BB ratio (6.86), 9th in ERA and SO/9.0 IP (13.22), 11th in BB/9.0 IP (1.93) and opponents OBP (.236), and 12th in WHIP (0.92). He has held opponents scoreless in 25 of his 31 appearances, including each of his last five (5.1 IP). The Nationals were 20-11 (.645) in games in which Hudson pitched this season.
Originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 5th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Old Dominion University (Va.), Hudson is 56-38 (.595) with 27 saves, a 3.82 ERA (317 ER, 746.0 IP) and 692 strikeouts in 431 career games (61 starts). Since the beginning of the 2019 season, he has posted a 2.94 ERA (41 ER, 125.1 IP) in 120 relief appearances, 12th-best among all Major League relievers. With the bat, Hudson earned the 2011 National League Silver Slugger Award when he batted .277 (18-for-65) with three doubles, one home run and 14 RBI in 33 games for the Diamondbacks.
