Oceanside, CA–Top seeds made their highly anticipated debuts during Day Two of the Super Girl Surf Festival, a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 4,000-level event, in two-to-four foot conditions and put on a showcase for spectators.
The Round of 64 and Round of 32 were completed in their entirety to set the Finals Day stage and see who will be crowned the 2025 Super Girl Surf Pro victor.
Only two competitors in Super Girl history have claimed a win on both the East and West Coasts, and Carlsbad’s Alyssa Spencer (USA) is one of them. Spencer’s insane Round of 64 start posted an event-best 16.50 (out of a possible 20) heat total on her forehand attack. Then, Spencer found the waves needed in tricky afternoon conditions to take another big heat win and surge toward the Round of 16.
“I don’t know what the secret is, but I always go out with some kind of game plan. I got lucky and found the two waves to get some good scores on,” said Spencer. “It was really tricky in that last heat. I had a game plan of getting two set waves in that heat and halfway through, I still had no waves and just had to change my game plan. The points for first weren’t super high so I knew I could get it done, and that’s what I was talking myself through.”
Making history in 2024 as the youngest Super Girl Surf Pro winner, Eden Walla (USA) stormed her way back into the Round of 16 after battling through her Round of 64 and Round of 32 heats. Walla’s debut led to an impressive 7.73 and 14.40 heat total before carrying that momentum into a major Round of 32 heat, featuring last year’s runner-up Kiara Goold (PYF), Peeta Kenworthy (USA), and Zoey Kaina (USA), who also advanced on a buzzer-beater. Now, the 16-year-old, Walla, prepares for another Finals Day showing.
“There’s a little bit more pressure. Pressure that I put on myself and pressure from the outside as well. But, there’s also a lot of confidence that comes with it, so I’m excited,” said Walla. “I’m just excited to be back here, and I’m just trying to continue growing with my surfing in and out of the water.”
Plus, former Pipe Pro CT victor Moana Jones Wong (HAW), alongside Round of 64 standout Vaihitimahana Inso (HAW), who advanced behind Jones Wong, Challenger Series contenders Sol Aguirre (PER) and Sanoa Dempfle-Olin (CAN), Lanea Mons (USA), and Kaia Howard (USA) earned Round of 32 heat wins to charge toward Finals Day appearances.
Jones Wong joins Inso, following one of the day’s best performances in the Round of 64 with an excellent 8.33, as the sole Hawaiʻi/Tahiti Nui contenders left to battle for the 2025 Super Girl Surf Pro title.
