San Diego, CA–The San Diego Padres have acquired right-handed pitcher Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for left-handed pitchers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf, according to Padres President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller.
Mize, 29, joins the Padres after posting a 4-6 record with a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts for the Tigers this season. He has allowed 26 earned runs over 86.2 innings while striking out 85 batters and issuing 19 walks.
The right-hander has allowed one run or fewer in nine of his 16 starts. Over his last 11 outings, Mize has recorded 53 strikeouts while walking just nine batters.
The six-year Major League veteran’s 2.70 ERA ranks fifth among American League pitchers with at least 15 starts this season. He also owns a 2.59 fielding independent pitching (FIP) mark, which ranks sixth among Major League starters.
Mize was selected No. 1 overall by Detroit in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He has spent his entire career with the Tigers, compiling a 27-31 record with a 3.95 ERA and 450 strikeouts in 105 games, including 103 starts, from 2020 through 2026.
Since the start of the 2025 season, Mize ranks tied for third among American League pitchers with at least 40 starts in fewest walks allowed, with 55. He also ranks fifth in FIP at 3.36 and ninth in ERA at 3.44.
Mize, a native of Springville, Alabama, had the best season of his career in 2025, winning a career-high 14 games while striking out 139 batters in 28 starts. His performance earned him his first All-Star selection.
Workman, 26, has appeared in 16 games for Detroit this season and is batting .158, going 6-for-38 with three doubles, two home runs and five RBIs.
He has spent much of the season with Triple-A Toledo, where he hit .305 with an .868 OPS in 82 games. Workman collected 99 hits, 25 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 51 RBIs, 20 stolen bases and 54 runs scored for the Mud Hens.
The Tigers selected Workman in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University.
He has appeared in 28 Major League games during his career with the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox in 2025 and Detroit in 2026. Across 643 minor league games, he owns a .253 batting average with 155 doubles, 33 triples, 83 home runs, 362 RBIs, 142 stolen bases and 400 runs scored.
The Padres will look to Mize’s starting-pitching experience and Workman’s versatility to strengthen the roster as San Diego continues its push for the postseason.
