Imperial, CA–Imperial High School celebrated a historic milestone as student-athletes Jayden Ayala and Darian Romo signed letters of acceptance to study at CETYS University and join the Zorros College League football team for the upcoming season.
The pair will be among the first athletes from Imperial High to play collegiate football internationally, marking a significant achievement for both the students and the school’s athletic program. The CETYS Zorros will debut this year in the prestigious “14 Greats” conference, part of Mexico’s National Student Football Organization.
“This is a historic day,” said David Shaw, head coach of the Imperial High School Tigers. “These are our first players to sign with CETYS University or any institution outside of the country. Both are exceptional athletes. Romo is a strong and dependable linebacker, while Ayala is a natural leader with a confident arm as a quarterback. I’m excited to see how they contribute to the Zorros’ success in the 14 Greats.”
CETYS head coach Luis Cervantes praised the addition of Ayala and Romo to the team, noting their potential impact on and off the field.
“We are committed to building cross-border relationships, and this signing continues our tradition of recruiting from U.S. high schools like Calexico and Imperial,” Cervantes said. “These two versatile athletes are not only talented on the field but also believe in CETYS University’s academic model and football vision. They will serve as ambassadors for future players from the region.”
Ayala, one of Southern California’s top high school quarterbacks, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.
“It’s a blessing to be here, signing in front of my community,” Ayala said. “CETYS offers a great opportunity, especially with its Global Program where I’ll study International Business in English. I’m excited about the future and ready to join the Zorros.”
Linebacker Darian Romo echoed his teammate’s enthusiasm.
“I’m ready to compete at the next level,” Romo said. “CETYS feels right—it’s a great school and a great opportunity. I plan to make the most of it.”
The Zorros come off a perfect season, having captured the 2024 ONEFA National Conference Championship. Their undefeated run earned them a promotion to the elite “14 Greats” division. Head Coach Luis Cervantes was recently recognized with the Golden Helmet Award and inducted into the Mexican Football Hall of Fame.
Ayala and Romo’s signing signals a new chapter for Imperial High School and a growing bond between U.S. and Mexican collegiate football programs.
