Escondido, CA–Escondido Police arrested three people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs at a checkpoint Friday in the city.
The checkpoint was held at 2nd Avenue and Broadway from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., authorities said.
Authorities said 30 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended or revoked license. About 637 vehicles were contacted. A driver who was arrested for DUI drugs was also in possession of a 1/4 pound of cocaine and multiple fentanyl pills.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads, officials said.
The next DUI checkpoint will be held in June.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
