SAN MARCOS–Authorities are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out Saturday that left a man dead inside a trailer in the unincorporated area of Escondido, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reports.

Deputies from the San Marcos Station responded to the blaze shortly after 2:30 p.m. at the 9800 block of Rocky Ridge Road to assist the fire department with a residential fire.

When deputies arrived at the location, the firefighters were on scene containing the fire. Deputies contacted the 71-year-old homeowner who was with fire department personnel. The homeowner told deputies he had just returned home from fishing. As the homeowner was walking out of his garage, he heard a loud explosion and saw fire.

The detached garage and some adjacent trailers caught fire. All the residents were accounted for except for one. After the fire department contained the fire, they discovered a man dead inside of one of the trailers.

Sheriff’s bomb and arson detectives are investigating the incident.
