Santee, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday evening in Santee, authorities said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
The checkpoint sites are selected based on data identifying areas with a history of impaired driving-related crashes, authorities said.
Authorities say the primary goal of DUI checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The Sheriff’s Office also reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. While both medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Residents who plan to drink or take medications that could impair driving should arrange a safe ride home. Options include using a designated sober driver, rideshare service, taxi or public transportation.
The Sheriff’s Office also warns that walking while impaired can be dangerous and advises individuals to have a sober person accompany them or wait until a safe ride is available.
Residents are urged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.
Party hosts are encouraged to provide nonalcoholic beverage options, monitor alcohol consumption, and ensure guests have safe transportation home.
According to officials, drivers arrested for a first-time DUI in California can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
Funding for the checkpoint program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
