San Diego, CA–San Diego city officials and residents gathered Monday morning to celebrate a $4.94 million renovation of Coral Gate Neighborhood Park in San Ysidro, marking the first major upgrades to the site since it was built in the early 2000s.
San Diego Councilmember Vivian Moreno (District 8) joined community members to unveil improvements that include new play equipment and surfacing, a paved entry plaza, refreshed landscaping, and updated security lighting. The project also added curb ramps, ADA-accessible walkways, accessible parking stalls, and new directional signage.
Other amenities were upgraded or added, such as drinking fountains, pet waste stations, trash and recycling bins, hot-coal receptacles, and relocated bike racks and benches.
“For too long, communities like San Ysidro have been left behind with park sites like Coral Gate being neglected for decades,” Moreno said. “The community’s advocacy to ensure Coral Gate Park was renovated was absolutely key to getting this project completed. Our families deserve a safe, modern, and accessible park.”
The City of San Diego and its contractors completed the upgrades this month after beginning work in mid-2024. Officials said community feedback helped shape the design, with new play structures and colors reflecting a seaside theme.
Elif Cetin, director of the Engineering and Capital Projects Department, said the project represents a successful partnership between the city and residents.
“We are glad this vision of an improved park for the San Ysidro community has come to life,” Cetin said.
The project was partially funded with $1.2 million in Community Development Block Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Coral Gate Neighborhood Park is located at 3775 Annella Road.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department manages more than 40,000 acres of park assets, including more than 400 parks, 26 miles of shoreline, 60 recreation centers, 15 pools, 13 skate parks and plazas, and three golf courses. More information is available at sandiego.gov/parks-and-recreation.
