Oceanside, CA–A traffic stop on Interstate 5 in Oceanside led to the arrest of a driver and the seizure of a large quantity of methamphetamine on Friday evening, authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 9:42 p.m. when Carlsbad Police officers conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation just north of Las Pulgas Road. During the stop, with the assistance of a K-9 unit, officers discovered 2,563 pounds of packaged crystal meth inside the vehicle.
The seized drugs have an estimated street value ranging from $1.15 million to $3.08 million, according to a statement from the Carlsbad Police Department.
The driver, identified as 24-year-old Eduardo Limas, a resident of Tijuana, Mexico, was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility. He faces charges of transportation of a controlled substance and possession of over 20 kilograms of methamphetamine. Limas is currently being held on $500,000 bail.
Carlsbad Police K-9 units are highly trained to assist in suspect apprehension and narcotics detection, honing their skills through regular and rigorous training.
The Carlsbad Police Department noted that their Crime Suppression Team frequently conducts traffic stops that significantly impact the safety and security of not only Carlsbad but also the broader San Diego County region.
