San Diego, CA–Authorities have released new details following the death of a 38-year-old Ramona man who died in custody this week at the George Bailey Detention Facility.
According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, Majid Arif Almajid died as a result of pulmonary infarcts of uncertain origin. The autopsy also identified the combined toxic effects of fentanyl and trazodone as contributing factors. His death was ruled accidental.
Almajid was found unresponsive in his jail bed at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Monday. Deputies and jail medical staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, which paramedics later took over from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
“The San Diego Sheriff’s Office extends our sympathies to the Almajid family and those affected by his passing,” officials said in a news release. A Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to assist the family during this time.
Almajid was originally arrested on December 20, 2023, by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. He faced multiple charges of sodomy with a child 10 years or younger and was booked into the San Diego Central Jail. On December 26, he was transferred to the George Bailey Detention Facility.
In response to the incident, the Sheriff’s Office reiterated ongoing efforts to improve jail conditions under Sheriff Martinez’s leadership. These include infrastructure upgrades, expanded medical and behavioral health care, and increased safety protocols for individuals in custody.
“A medical doctor or nurse practitioner is present at jail intake to identify and address medical needs early,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “The Sheriff’s Contraband and Narcotics Interdiction Team remains the first line of defense against drugs and weapons entering our facilities.”
As is standard protocol, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is conducting a comprehensive investigation into Almajid’s death. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board was notified and will be involved in the review process.
