San Diego, CA–County health officials issued a water contact closure on Sunday for the Tijuana Slough, Imperial Beach Shoreline, and Imperial Beach Pier due to sewage contamination from the Tijuana River, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality announced.
Officials confirmed that sewage from the Tijuana River is flowing into the ocean, contaminating recreational waters. The public is being warned to avoid contact with ocean water in the affected areas, as exposure could lead to illness. The beaches will remain closed until water sampling and field observations confirm that conditions are safe for recreational use.
In addition to the closures, an advisory has been issued for Silver Strand State Beach after recent water quality tests revealed bacteria levels exceeding California health standards, posing potential health risks to beachgoers.
Other beaches, including the San Diego River’s Dog Beach, Tourmaline Surf Park, La Jolla Cove, and La Jolla Children’s Pool, remain under advisory for elevated bacteria levels.
