San Diego, CA–County health officials have lifted the water contact closure for Coronado North Beach after recent water quality testing showed the area now meets California health standards and is safe for recreational use.
Despite the reopening, several beaches throughout San Diego County remain under advisories due to elevated bacteria levels that exceed state health standards and could pose a risk of illness to swimmers and other beachgoers.
The advisory remains in effect for La Jolla Cove, San Elijo Lagoon, Comfort Station north of Leisure Lagoon, Fiesta Island Northwest Shore, Santa Clara Cove, San Diego River at Dog Beach, and La Jolla Children’s Pool.
County officials advise the public to avoid water contact at these locations until bacteria levels return to acceptable standards.
Meanwhile, a shoreline closure remains in place from the International Border north through Avenida Lunar in Coronado, affecting the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Imperial Beach shoreline, Silver Strand State Beach shoreline, and Avenida Lunar in Coronado.
Officials said the closure is necessary because the water remains impacted by sewage contamination, creating a potential health hazard for anyone entering the ocean. The closure will remain in effect until ongoing water quality monitoring confirms the affected areas meet state standards and are safe for recreational use.
Residents and visitors are urged to avoid water contact in all closed areas and to heed posted warning signs until restrictions are lifted.
